Futures questions, answered

Are futures prop firms regulated, and is a funded account real money?

Short answer

Most futures prop firms sell evaluations. You pay a fee to trade an account, and the funded account you get is usually a simulated account, so your payouts come from the firm, not from the market. That is a different business from a futures broker that holds your own money. Before you pay any firm, read its rules yourself and look it up on NFA BASIC, the free registration search the CFTC points traders to.

Is prop firm trading a scam?

Not by itself. A firm can be honest and still be a poor deal for you. Many traders do not pass, the fee is gone if you fail, and fees add up when you buy again.

The fair test is simple. Are the rules clear? Are the payout rules written down before you buy? Can you afford to lose the fee?

How do I check a firm?

Look the firm up on NFA BASIC. The CFTC says the law requires certain firms and individuals to be registered, and it says to verify registration before you work with anyone to trade futures.

  • Search the firm and its owners on NFA BASIC.
  • Check the CFTC RED List: foreign firms that seem to need CFTC registration but are not registered.
  • Read the payout rules before the evaluation rules.
  • Search for recent rule changes. Firms change prices and rules often.

What is the difference between a prop firm and a broker?

A futures broker holds your own money in your own account, and your gains and losses are real. In most prop firm plans you trade the firm's simulated account, and your risk is the fee.

What are the red flags?

Walk away from promises and pressure.

  • Promises of income, or funding for everyone.
  • A sale that is always about to end.
  • Payout rules you cannot find before you pay.
  • Support that will not answer rule questions in writing.

Common mistakes

  • Buying many evaluations at once because of a sale.
  • Assuming funded means your own real-money account.
  • Skipping the payout rules.
