Futures questions, answered

Do futures hours change in Hawaiʻi when the mainland changes its clocks?

Short answer

Yes. Hawaiʻi stays on HST all year, but CME sets futures hours in Chicago time, so every futures time in Hawaiʻi moves one hour when the mainland changes its clocks. On Sunday, November 1, 2026, everything moves one hour later: the futures week opens at 1:00 pm HST instead of 12:00 pm. On Sunday, March 14, 2027, everything moves back one hour earlier.

Which dates matter for a Hawaiʻi trader?

Five dates in the next year move your trading day. Two are UK dates, and three are US dates.

DateWhat changesWhat it means in HST
Sun, Oct 25, 2026UK clocks go backLondon open: about 9:00 pm to about 10:00 pm
Sun, Nov 1, 2026US clocks go backFutures open 1:00 pm, pause 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, Friday close 12:00 pm, New York open 4:30 am, big reports 3:30 am
Sun, Mar 14, 2027US clocks go forwardFutures open 12:00 pm, pause 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Friday close 11:00 am, New York open 3:30 am, big reports 2:30 am

Sun, Nov 7, 2027US clocks go backEvery US time moves one hour later again

What is the odd week in late October?

From October 25 to November 1, 2026, the UK has changed its clocks but the US has not. London opens at about 10:00 pm HST while the US futures times stay on their summer schedule.

The same thing happens in spring, from March 14 to March 28, 2027: the US times move earlier, but London still opens at about 10:00 pm HST.

What should I update on the clock change?

Update anything you set in HST by hand. Your trading platform shows exchange times correctly, but your alarms, notes and written plan do not change by themselves.

  • Phone alarms for your session.
  • The session times in your written trading plan.
  • Alerts or automated tools set to fixed HST times.
  • The session tags in your journal, so summer and winter trades still compare.

Does Tokyo change?

No. Japan does not change its clocks, so the Tokyo open stays at 2:00 pm HST all year.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming your alarms update when the mainland clocks change.
  • Using the US date for London. The UK changes on the last Sunday of October and the last Sunday of March.
  • Comparing summer and winter trades by HST time without noting the shift.
