You see a beautiful setup on the 5-minute chart. You enter. Immediately, price reverses. What happened? You were trading against the higher timeframe. This is the most common mistake in day trading and the easiest to fix.
At Hawaii Trading Coaches, we use a three-layer timeframe system. 1H chart: direction. Are we in an uptrend, downtrend, or range? This is your bias. You only take trades in the direction of the 1H trend. 15M chart: structure. Where are the key support and resistance levels? Where is VWAP? Where is the prior session's POC? This is your context. 5M chart: execution. This is where you find your entry trigger, set your stop, and manage the trade.
Each timeframe serves a different purpose. The 1H tells you WHAT to trade (direction). The 15M tells you WHERE to trade (levels). The 5M tells you WHEN to trade (trigger). When all three align, your probability skyrockets.
When they conflict, you sit out. A 5M long setup against a 1H downtrend is a low-probability trade. A 5M short setup aligned with a 1H downtrend at a 15M resistance level? That is a high-probability trade.
Before every trade, run this checklist. 1H direction: bullish, bearish, or neutral? 15M context: am I at a significant level? 5M trigger: does my entry setup meet all criteria? If all three say yes, take the trade. If any one says no, skip it.
This simple filter eliminates roughly 60% of losing trades. Not because the 5M setups were bad. Because they were fighting the higher timeframe context.
Only looking at one timeframe. Overriding the 1H bias because the 5M looks good. Using too many timeframes (analysis paralysis). Switching timeframes mid-trade to justify holding a loser.
Three timeframes is the sweet spot. Fewer than three and you lack context. More than three and you can justify anything.
1H: NQ is above VWAP, making higher highs. Bias: bullish. 15M: Price pulled back to the 15M 20 EMA, which aligns with yesterday's POC at 18,450. Context: high-probability long zone. 5M: Bullish engulfing candle at 18,452 with RVOL above 1.0. Trigger: confirmed.
All three layers agree. Enter long at 18,455. Stop at 18,435 (below the POC). Target 18,495 (2:1 R:R). This is a high-conviction trade because every timeframe supports the thesis.
