The First Break of the Range Usually Fails

NQ first range break reversion research chart, Hawaii Trading Academy

Price pokes above a clear range and you feel it. The breakout. The urge to chase. We checked what actually happens next on NQ.

We looked at 2,088 sessions where the regular session broke the prior London range. Price was back inside the range within 30 minutes 83% of the time.

The First Poke Is Usually a Trap

A completed range is a level a lot of people are watching. The first break through it often grabs stops, then reverses. That is not a conspiracy. It is just where the liquidity sits.

So the trader who chases the first break is fading the base rate. Four times out of five, that poke came right back.

Context, Handled With Care

Now the caveat, because we always give it. This is a strong descriptive pattern, graded A, but it is still path context, not a mechanical entry. An 83% reversion rate over 30 minutes is not the same as an 83% win rate on a trade with a stop and a target. Slippage, the fill, and where you put your risk all change the picture.

What it does buy you is patience. Let the first break prove itself before you believe it.

The full first-break study is in the NQ Research Library inside Net Alpha Pro, with the exact sample and the caveats spelled out.

Amateurs chase the poke. Professionals wait for acceptance.
