Trade Review Framework: What to Log and Why

Your trading journal is either your most valuable tool or a waste of time. The difference is what you log and how you review it.

Most traders log P&L. That is the least useful data point. It tells you whether you made or lost money. It doesn't tell you why. And the why is everything.

The 7-Field Framework

Field 1: Setup Type. What strategy triggered this trade? RVOL + VWAP? Opening Range Breakout? Mean Reversion? Label every trade with its setup type. Over 100 trades, you will see which setups are actually profitable and which are bleeding you.

Field 2: Entry Quality. Rate 1-5. Did you enter at the ideal price? Did you wait for confirmation? Did you chase? This field reveals execution patterns that P&L alone hides.

Field 3: Exit Quality. Rate 1-5. Did you hit your target? Did you exit early out of fear? Did you hold too long out of greed? Separate your exit quality from the trade outcome. A trade that hit your target but you exited early is a 2/5 exit on a winning trade.

Field 4: Emotional State. Were you calm, anxious, bored, or tilted? Log this before and after the trade. Over time, you will find your worst trades cluster around specific emotional states. That is actionable data.

Field 5: Rule Adherence. Yes or No. Did this trade follow every rule in your system? If no, which rule did you break and why? This is the most important field. It separates system trades from emotional trades.

Field 6: Market Context. What was the broader market doing? Trending? Ranging? High volatility? Low volume? Your strategy has conditions where it works and conditions where it doesn't. This field helps you map those conditions.

Field 7: Lesson. One sentence. What did this trade teach you? If the answer is nothing, you are not reviewing deeply enough.

The Weekly Review

Daily logging is collection. Weekly review is where the learning happens. Every Friday or Saturday, pull up your week's trades. Sort by setup type. Sort by emotional state. Sort by rule adherence.

Look for patterns. Are your worst trades happening at the same time of day? With the same emotional state? In the same market conditions? These patterns are your edge leaks. Fix them and your P&L improves without changing your strategy.

Why Most Journals Fail

Most trading journals fail because traders treat them as punishment. They log when they lose and skip when they win. They write paragraphs of emotion instead of structured data. They never review.

A good journal is structured, consistent, and reviewed. Seven fields. Every trade. Weekly review. That is it. The traders who do this improve measurably within 90 days.

We recommend TradeZella for automated trade logging with custom fields. It turns your journal into a database you can query, filter, and analyze.
