The Pre-Market Routine That Saves Your Trading Day

The best traders don't start trading at the open. They start preparing 30-60 minutes before it. Your pre-market routine determines whether you trade with a plan or trade on impulse.

Why a Routine Matters

Without a routine, you show up at the open reactive. You see a candle move. You chase it. You take a trade without context. Within minutes you are down and emotional. The rest of the day is spent trying to dig out of a hole you created in the first five minutes.

With a routine, you show up prepared. You know the levels. You know the bias. You know what setups you are looking for and what you are avoiding. The open is just execution of a pre-written plan.

The 18-Minute Framework

Minutes 1-5: Overnight Review. Check NQ futures overnight range. Where did the overnight session trade relative to yesterday's value area? Is there a gap? How big? Check global markets for context.

Minutes 6-10: Level Marking. Mark yesterday's POC, VAH, VAL on your chart. Mark any significant overnight levels. Identify the prior day's high and low. Mark VWAP (it resets at the open but the developing VWAP from overnight gives you a reference).

Minutes 11-15: News and Catalyst Check. Check the economic calendar. Is there a CPI, PPI, FOMC, or NFP today? Check pre-market earnings. Check any overnight news that could drive volatility. If there is a major event, adjust your sizing and strategy accordingly.

Minutes 16-18: Write Your Plan. In your journal, write three things. Today's bias (bullish, bearish, or neutral and why). The two or three setups you are looking for. Your max daily loss and max trade count. This takes 3 minutes and saves you from every impulsive decision you would otherwise make today.

What Happens After the Bell

The bell rings. You watch the first 15 minutes. You don't trade. You observe. Where is price relative to your levels? Is RVOL confirming your bias? Is the opening range developing cleanly or choppy?

After 15 minutes, you have context. Now you can execute. Your first trade is deliberate, not reactive. Your sizing is pre-calculated. Your stop is at a logical level. Your target is defined. This is professional trading.

The Compound Effect

One good pre-market routine doesn't change your life. 200 consecutive good pre-market routines change your career. The routine compounds. Each day you show up more prepared, more disciplined, more mechanical. Over months, you become a different trader.

The traders who skip the routine are the ones who blow up at the open. The traders who run the routine are the ones who compound. Choose your side.
